Ashokkumar D Mistry asks why can’t people across different marginalised groups not have empathy for each other and why do we have these barriers of exclusivity?
In my formative years, I went to visit my sister who had moved to London for work.
I remember her advice as I went venturing out for the first time. She looked me straight in the eyes and said: “When you’re on the tube, don’t look anyone in the eyes”.
As I boarded the first tube train from Wembley to Central London, I pictured myself as a proper country mouse out of his depth visiting the town mouse.
As I entered the carriage I noticed no one looking at each other.
My ADHD got the better of me as I was compelled to just watch people in a collective moment of mutual distrust.
Could I rest and belong?
Had I outstayed my welcome?
